About the Course

This Equine Nutrition course will give you a thorough education of the importance of correct feeding, the science behind what we should feed our horses and how we should approach feeding them. We are lucky that there has been a plethora of research on feeding, and plenty of expertise in terms of nutritionists, practical horsemen and women, and academics that we can draw from.

The course consists of ten modules, divided into three parts:

Part One starts by teaching you about the digestive system and the rules of feeding as a background to the reasons behind how we feed horses. Part one continues with a fact finding exercise, using a horse that you own or know. We discuss in detail what information is important to know before feeding and teach you about every aspect. You will complete a worksheet as you work through this section.

Part Two provides you with a simple process for developing a feeding plan for your horse and we discuss in detail about every aspect. Again, in this section you will be completing a worksheet which will act as your assessment.

Part Three pulls together all the knowledge you have gained so far and helps you learn about feeding different types of horse, for example, older horses, those that struggle with obesity, and horses with metabolic problems.

This course will give you a full understanding of nutrition and feeding to help you formulate an appropriate feeding regime for your horse. You can see details of all the modules below.

How will this course help you?

Are you a horse owner or are you thinking about buying a horse in the future?

Do you ever feel overwhelmed and unsure about what you should feed your horse?

Would you like to equip yourself with the correct knowledge so that you are confident you know how to feed horses in the best way that you can?

There is so much choice when it comes to feeding that it can become very complicated whereas, in fact, feeding horses should be simple! In the wild, they eat grass. Why, then, do we typically have shelves full of supplements, bags and bags of feed, with very little focus on the feed that is most important to horses, forage!

This course will teach you about the importance of forage first and foremost, with a plan to then building any additional feeding around this.

We, at Equine Distance Learning, pride ourselves on delivering learning in an easily digestible format to make learning easy for you. By committing to lifelong learning you are committing to caring for your horse in the best way that you can.
