Welcome

This award will introduce you to some of the skills and knowledge that you will require to be safe around horses. Previous experience in handling or working around horses is not necessary for you to enjoy this award. This is a theory based course that can be completed as preparation for the Introduction to Horse Care challenge award, where you can develop your practical skills.

We will guide you through each topic and as well as quizzes, there are sections within the booklet for you to complete and make notes.

This award covers:

  • Horse Behaviour
  • Passports and Microchips
  • Signs of Health
  • Disease Prevention
  • Feeding
  • Field Checks
  • Poisonous Plants
  • Parts of the Saddle and Bridle

Once you have enrolled on the course we will register you as a student with the British Horse Society. Within approximately one month, you will be sent the BHS Challenge Award Horse Knowledge Part Two Booklet. Please make sure you email [email protected] to let her know your postal address so that we can send this booklet to you.

This booklet will support your learning and it has space for notes to be written and questions that will need to be answered, see the example below:

For those of you who wish to start on the course immediately, at the end of each module we have scanned the relevant pages of the booklet so that you can download them and complete them while waiting for the posted booklet to arrive.

In order to complete the course you will need to complete all questions in the booklet and then send it to us for marking. If you would prefer you can scan all completed parts of the booklet and we can mark it, then send you the feedback form to stick in your booklet. We will then notify the BHS of your completion of the course.

This course is designed to be collaborative learning. There is no pressure and no exam, just continual assessment to support your learning. If you have any questions then please do not hesitate to ask. We hope you enjoy the course!
